A first-year MTech student of the National Institute of Technology at Warangal today allegedly committed suicide in the NIT's hostel apparently depressed over his 'poor' academic performance, the police said.

The body of the 22-year-old student, a native of Bihar's Nawada district, was found hanging from the ceiling fan of his hostel room, they said.

An investigating official, quoting his friends, said the student had "failed" in two subjects in the first semester and he might have resorted to the extreme step apparently depressed over it.

However, an NIT official said 'failure' in the subjects could not be the reason for his suicide and he had performed well in the second semster.

Polices said his parents asked one of his friends to check after he did not respond to their calls today.

The friend found the door of his room bolted from the inside and alerted the Chief Warden, police said, adding, the body was found hanging when it was broken open.
