Mumbai cop assaulted by drunk bike riders; all accused held

A motorcycle-borne Sub-Inspector was attacked by four drunken men on two bikes for overtaking them, police said today.

In a swift action, police arrested all the four attackers hours after the incident which took place at around 1 last night in suburban Chembur, they said.

Sub-Inspector Swapnil Patil, attached with Vakola Police Station, was going on his motorcycle when four persons riding two bikes stopped him at a traffic signal in Kurla.

They got into an argument with Patil for overtaking their two-wheelers and subsequently assaulted him and fled from the spot, police said.

During the attack, they tried to snatch his gold ring but failed. Patil was later admitted in Bhabha Hospital.
 

Acting on his complaint, police registered an offence against the four persons and moved swiftly to nab them from suburban Mulund early this morning.

During investigation, it was revealed all the accused were in an inebriated state and riding the bikes without licence, police said.

In the recent past, there have been a spate of attacks on police personnel by unruly motorists in the metropolis.

In August, a traffic Constable was fatally attacked with a wooden plank by a juvenile after he asked the latter to show vehicle documents and driving licence at a petrol pump in suburban Bandra.
