Odisha's new director general of police R P Sharma today said he will infuse Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik's 3Ts formula into the police system besides giving priority to the naxal problem and law and order.

"Our main objective is to bring more transparency and transformation in the police system. The 3Ts formula of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik- technology, transparency and team work- is also equally applicable to the police," Sharma told reporters after taking over charge from K B Singh.

On the Maoist menace, Sharma said, "It is certainly a challenge for the police. We will minimise it. We will look forward towards effective use of new technology to deal with crime and support continuous training programmes for skill development of officials to handle criminals."

Sharma was elevated to DG rank and appointed as director of state vigilance in January 2016. He had served as the commissioner of police in the Bhubaneswar - Cuttack commissionerate of police.

Sharma had also served as the superintendent of police in Kalahandi, Berhampur, Dhenkanal and Balasore districts between 1990 and 2001. He had served as DIG in Crime Branch and Central Range.

Sharma had a stint in the National Security Guard (NSG) and Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). He had also served with the UN in its Support Mission at Haiti.

A native of Rajasthan, Sharma has medical and legal degrees.

Before assuming office as the DGP, Sharma was given guard of honour at the premises of the state police headquarters. He paid floral tributes to the police martyrs at the memorial.
