Police arrested one person in Tolichowki area for allegedly procuring 'khat' leaves which are essentially a flowering shrub which has a stimulating narcotic effect, similar to that of cocaine, official sources said.

'Khat' is illegal and falls under Schedule-I drugs category under the Controlled Substances Act and also comes under the purview of Narcotic Drug and Psychotropic Substance, a police release said here today.

After receiving credible information, Commissioner's Task Force (South Zone Team) sleuths nabbed Khaled Bin Ali yesterday and seized a consignment of the leaves, the police said.

Ali had allegedly procured the leaves from one Abdul Rahman of Yemen, who is presently absconding, who in turn used to get it from Ethiopia or Yemen via Mumbai in the name of vegetables, the police said.

"They used to get khat leaves through suppliers and were selling them to foreigners in Hyderabad," the police said.
