A one-week-old elephant calf was rescued by forest department officials today at the forest areas bordering Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

Conservator of forests P Ganesan said the calf was part of a herd of seven elephants which came yesterday to the river for drinking water and later abandoned it.

Efforts by forest officials to reunite the calf with the herd failed following which they handed it over to Cauvery wildlife warden in Karnataka, he said.
