Pakistan's powerful army chief Gen Raheel Sharif today left for China on a two-day official visit to discuss various security and bilateral issues with the Chinese political and military leadership.

A military spokesman said in a statement that Gen Sharif is paying the visit on the "invitation of China".

"During his stay in China, the Chief of Army Staff will meet Chinese political and military leadership," he said.

It is believed that Gen Sharif would apprise the Chinese leadership about the recent actions taken against the extremists in the country.

Gen Sharif is taking lead in the fight against militancy and visited Afghanistan and Britain since December 16 Peshawar school massacre that left 150 people dead, mostly students.

The tragedy shocked Pakistani leadership and forced it to show commitment to eliminate militancy.
