A brother of Pakistan's former army chief General Ashfaq Pervaiz Kayani is facing corruption charges for an alleged fraud of 17 billion rupees in real estate deals meant for the families of martyred soldiers.
Anti-corruption watchdog National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has launched investigation against Kamran Kayani of Elysium Holding and Hammad Arshad of Globaco for failing to deliver plots of land to soldiers and families of those martyred in the war on terror even after six years.
The complaint was made by the Defence Housing Authority (DHA), a semi-army organisation, which had given contracts to the accused for development of a housing scheme in Lahore.
The DHA City project was launched in 2009 primarily to accommodate and facilitate the families of martyrs, war wounded and soldiers to get small size plots in recognition of their services.
It is said that Kamran Kayani was instrumental to get the contracts due to his "links" in military establishment.
After the compliant, NAB has arrested Hammad Arshad and conducted raids to arrest Kamran Kayani but could not apprehend him as according to officials he has already left the country and now lives in UAE.
DHA said that the same group was also involved in a corruption in DHA Islamabad which is also being probed by the NAB.
Amjad Kayani, another brother of former army chief defended his brother Kamran and said their opponents hatched conspiracy to defame their family.
The role of General Kayani is not known in the scandal who was army chief when some of the contracts between DHA and the company of his brother were finalised.
