Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is expected to attend the annual UN General Assembly meeting in New York later this month, an official said today.

Sharif cancelled some of his foreign trips last month due to protests by Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan and cleric Tahir-ul-Qadri of the Pakistan Awami Tehreek, who have been demanding the Premier's resignation.

Sharif is planning to travel to the United States from September 24-27 to address the UN General Assembly (UNGA) session, an official of the Foreign Office told PTI.

The official said the plan was still tentative as Sharif will send his representative if he could not travel due to domestic compulsions.

Foreign Office spokeswoman Tasnim Aslam said at her weekly briefing that it has been a long-standing practice to participate in the high-level segment of UN General Assembly at the leadership level and to make a policy statement which projects Pakistan's perspective on vital issues of interest.

"As regards the high level 69th Session of General Assembly, details are still being worked out and once we have a decision we will share it," she said.

Asked about whether a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sharif would take place on the sidelines of the UNGA, Aslam did not rule out the possibility saying, "Whenever Pakistani leadership attends the UNGA session, the occasion is utilised to interact with other world leaders.
