The Calcutta High Court today directed Jadavpur University vice-chancellor Abhijit Chakraborti to file an affidavit stating his position on a petition challenging his appointment.

Justice Dipankar Dutta, hearing a petition challenging the appointment of Chakraborti as the vice-chancellor, directed him, the state government and Jadavpur University to file affidavits by December 17.

Petitioners Subhrangshu Acharya, a member of the family which had donated land for the setting up of the university, and three alumni were directed to file their affidavits in reply by December 24.

The petitioners claimed that he was not a man of integrity and that his competence to run the university was questionable.

It was claimed that the vice-chancellor had given work orders worth Rs 65 lakh without going through any tendering process.

Chakraborti has been facing opposition from a section of students and teachers of the university ever since he was first appointed as the interim vice-chancellor.

He was also gheraoed by students over a demand to change members of a committee to investigate a molestation case in the campus, which prompted him to call in the police in the middle of night of September 17.
