Two fishermen were injured today after a group of pirates opened fire on them while trying to catch hold of their boat near the Khatajhuri jungle in Choto Mollakhali in South 24 Parganas district, the police said.

A fishing boat with three fishermen from Gosaba was attacked by a group of pirates who came from the Bangladesh side of Garal river close to the jungles of Khatajhuri, a senior officer of the Choto Mollakhali coastal police station said.

"When the pirates saw they would not be able to capture the fishing boat, they opened fire, injuring two persons," the officer said.

The injured have been identified as Haipada Barman and Subhas Mondal, both residents of Aamtoli village in Gosaba-Choto Mollakhali.

The injured were first rushed to the Canning Sub-Divisonal Hospital and then shifted to Chittaranjan Hospital in Kolkata for further treatment.

The pirates managed to flee the area, the officer added.
