Political thriller film in mainstream format

Labelling the film 'Kanamachhi' as a blend of realistic and entertainment genres, popular celluloid sleuth Abir Chatterjee today said it was more of a political thriller kind. "The director Raj Chakraborty has portrayed it sensibly in a way all of use can identify with the characters. It speaks about how and why today's young generation of doctors, engineers should take the new initiative to cleanse the system," Abir said about the movie this evening. "Raj is shifting from the hardcore entertainer type to the realistic genre, not in preachy style, but in such a way that the audience while coming out of the theatre will be stirred by the issues but not feel over-burdened," Abir, who essayed the role of a college goon but turned out the protagonist, said about the movie produced by Eskay Films. Asked how was the switch-over from the crime-buster of early 20s Byomkesh to present-day Abhimanyu (in Kanamachi), Abir said "the film Byomkesh Bakshi by Anjan Dutta was a detective thriller having the twist of a crime story whereas Kanamachhi is a political thriller where the chain of events lead to another twist in the tale." "It has all the ingredients of a mainstream film but blends that with the happenings of our time in a straight narrative style," he said at the music launch of film here. "Since the presentday generation is more familiar with the trends of world cinema, and also flocks to theatres to watch Bengali movies, the treatment and filmcraft has to be smart and realistic so that they can relate. We can't sit back, we have to take initiatives to retain this audience." Asked if Kanamachi is the reflection of current happenings of society, the Sandip Ray-directed 'Jekhane Bhooter Bhoy' actor said, "You can better call it a socially relevant film. It is not a fantasy story though I have no objection to infusion of fantasy elements in our movies." Dwelling on her role of a journalist, out to unmask the nexust between politics-muscle power-cash, Tollywood heroine Srabonti said, "She is one character I would be proud to be in real life. Movies should project journalists in such light so that society can look upto media as the chronicler of truth."
