The mercy petition of Yakub Memon, facing the gallows in the 1993 Mumbai blasts, was rejected on Wednesday night by President Pranab Mukherjee, after the government advised him to. Memon’s lawyers have now moved the Supreme Court seeking a stay on his execution for 14 days.

Mukherjee held consultations, first with Home Minister Rajnath Singh, and then with Home Secretary L C Goyal and Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar. The confabulations lasted over two hours, after which the President took the decision to reject the petition filed by Memon in a last-ditch attempt to escape death. The meeting took place after government officials considered the mercy petition at the behest of the President, who acts on the advice of the Council of Ministers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed the issue with officials at his residence and concluded the President should be advised to reject the petition. The consultations took place in the evening on the issue, with Law Secretary P K Malhotra holding discussions with the home secretary.
Immediately after the cabinet meeting, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh drove straight to Rashtrapati Bhawan and apprised the President about the government's decision of rejecting.
Memon is scheduled to be hanged on Thursday morning in Nagpur after the President’s rejection of his plea.
