Press Trust of India New Delhi
Left-backed farmers' organisations along with some opposition parties today staged a protest here against Centre's Land Acquisition Bill saying it is against the interests of farmers.

The protesters maintained that the Bill will lead to food crisis and was against the interests of the country's future.

"We think this Bill is not in the interest of our peasantry. It is not in the interest of agriculture and therefore, not in the interest of country's future. And we think this will lead to very very serious deficiencies in our food security, food self-sufficiency.

"And this sort of bonanza for land mafias cannot be given at the expense on Indian farmer, Indian economy and future of our youth," CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, who addressed the rally, said.

He told farmers that their unity outside Parliament will give the MPs strength to fight the legislation inside the House.

CPI's Rajya Sabha MP D Raja, on his part, said the Modi government aims at destroying Indian agriculture and displacing millions of people by bringing in the legislation which helps corporates and big business houses.

"It is not in the interest of nation as a whole and so, we have to oppose (it)," he said and expressed confidence that the protesters would win and Modi Government "will have to succumb and listen to the voice of sanity, voice of patriotic responsibility" in the interest of the country and people".

CPI(M) MP from Tripura, Jitendra Choudhary pointed out that in states where Left parties ruled, farmers did not need commit suicide.
