A locality in old city area today saw clashes between stone-pelting mobs and police after locals alleged desecration of a mosque as some of its window panes were found broken.

A group of youth started pelting stones on police and paramilitary CRPF in Saraf Kadal after the window panes were found broken, police said.

A police official said the protestors alleged that the window panes were broken by teargas shells fired by the security forces yesterday during protests against killing of a youth Gowhar Ahmad Dar at Zainakote on Saturday.

The security forces used batons and lobbed teargas shells to quell the protests but clashes were going on in the area till last reports came in, the official said.

Dar, an engineering student, was hit by a teargas shell in the head during a clash between a stone-pelting mob and police near his residence in Zainakote on Saturday evening. He succumbed to injuries in a hospital.
