Punjab govt to name 'state flower'

Punjab government has decided to name a 'state flower' and suggestions have been received for the same from the Bio-Diversity Board and all universities of the state.
An official spokesperson said while the government has received numerous names for the status of 'state flower' but Butea Monosperma (Palash) and Phanera Variegata (Kachnar) are leading the race.
The spokesperson said the suggestions received also include names of some other flower species like Kikar, Gurhal, Jawakusum and Rohra.
He said some of these are on the verge of extinction and if a choice is made from among them then concrete strategies would be formulated for their preservation.
