Press Trust of India New Delhi
Delhi Transport Minister Gopal Rai today directed immediate payment of outstanding salaries of civil defence volunteers who have been deployed as marshals in public buses.

The minister's move came after around 100 civil defence volunteers staged a dharna outside Delhi Secretariat for non-payment of their salaries for three-four months.

In a statement, government said that Transport department has decided that it will now maintain a record of the bank account numbers of the marshals so that bottlenecks in transferring the salaries in their bank accounts are permanently removed.

A senior government official said the decision was taken after Rai pointed out that lack of records should not become an impediment in the functioning of bus marshals.

Rai directed the officials concerned to ensure that salaries of these volunteers are credited in their bank accounts by Friday.

Staging dharna, a civil defence volunteer said there were several volunteers, who were hired during the first phase of the odd-even scheme car rationing scheme but most have not got salaries of three-four months.
