Railways has carried 1,009.73 million tonnes (MT) of freight traffic in 2012-13 fiscal, registering an increase of over four per cent from the previous year.
The goods transported in 2012-13 showed an increase of 39.95 MT over the freight traffic of 969.78 MT carried during the corresponding fiscal, registering a growth of 4.12 per cent, a Railway statement said.
In March alone, freight carried was 98.20 MT as against 93.85 MT carried during the same period last year, it said.

During the 2012-13 fiscal, the national transporter registered 19.63 per cent increase in revenue earnings as it generated Rs 1,24,814.87 crore as against Rs 1,04,334.61 crore the previous fiscal.
Of these, earnings from freight went up from Rs 69,674.13 crore in 2011-12 to Rs 85,869.02 crore in 2012-13, showing an increase of 23.24 per cent, the statement said.
Earnings from passenger segment were Rs 31,896.24 crore as compared to Rs 28,645.55 crore the previous fiscal, an increase of 11.35 per cent, it said.
During the financial year 2012-13, Railways also saw 8,501.30 million passenger bookings compared to 8,306.17 million bookings in the previous fiscal, an increase of 2.35 per cent, the statement said.
