The engineer, who was killed in a chopper crash in Badrinath today, was hit by its rotor blades as he tried to save himself by jumping out.

Vikram Lamba, who was part of the crew, hailed from Assam.

"He was not wearing any seat belt and was hit by the rotor blades as he tried to save himself by jumping out," Uttarakhand Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj told PTI.

Terming the accident as very unfortunate, he said a magisterial probe has been ordered into it to find out what led to it.

Maharaj also said it could be a "one-off" incident as numerous sorties were made by choppers to and from these helipads this yatra season as well as in the past but nothing ever went wrong.

The engineer was killed and two pilots suffered injuries when a helicopter carrying pilgrims met with an accident while taking off from the Himalayan shrine of Badrinath in Uttarakhand today. All the five passengers were safe.
