The issue of separate SGPC for Haryana had its echo in the Rajya Sabha today with Shiromani Akali Dal asking the government what it was doing to stop Haryana government from enacting a law that was "unconstitutional" and was an "insult" to Parliament.
Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Sudhdev Singh Dhindsa said the Haryana government had passed an act which was "illegal" and "unconstitutional".
He said the SGPC is the supreme religious body of Sikhs and was formed in 1925 under an Act of Parliament after many sacrifices by Sikhs.
"It is an insult to Parliament. It is an insult to the Constitution. What is the government doing about it? It is a joke being played with Parliament," Dhindsa said.
This was objected to by Birender Singh (Cong), who said Haryana was well within its right to enact such a law and cited the example of separate Gurdwara Management Committee for Delhi.
"How was Delhi SGPC formed? This committee was with the consent of Sikhs in Haryana," he said.
