SC says no to PIL on scientific probe by cops

A bench of justices Aftab Alam and H L Gokhale while declining to entertain the plea, asked petitioner T P Abdul Jaleel's counsel Jayesh K Unnikrishnan to explore the option of filing an impleadment application (IA) to a public interest litigation (PIL) petition of Uttar Pradesh former police chief Prakash Singh, pending with the court and raising similar issue.

Jaleel in his petition said despite a number of recommendations from experts bodies, the Centre had not taken any step to introduce scientific methods of investigation.

The petition cited the recommendations of the Police Act Drafting Committee (PADC) 2006, the Malimath Committee on reforms of Criminal Justice System, 2003 and the National Police Commission(NPC) report 1979 emphasising scientific aids to probe a crime.
