Copper futures traded 0.45 per cent higher at Rs 309.85 per kg today as speculators enlarged positions amid rising spot demand.

However, a weak trend in base metals pack at the London Metal Exchange (LME), capped the gains.

In futures trade, copper for delivery in June rose Rs 1.40, or 0.45 per cent, at Rs 309.85 per kg in a business turnover of 1,428 lots at Multi Commodity Exchange.

Similarly, the metal for delivery in far-month August edged up by Rs 1.30, or 0.42 per cent, at Rs 314.45 per kg in 12 lots.

Marketmen attributed rise in copper prices at futures trade to pick up in demand from consuming industries at the domestic spot markets but a weak trend in base metals overseas, restricted gains.

Meanwhile, copper for delivery in three months fell by 2 per cent to settle at USD 4613 per tonne at the LME in yesterday's trade.
