State river status demanded for Swarnarekha

Jharkhand Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affair Minister, Saryu Roy today demanded 'state river' status to Swarnarekha.

Inaugurating the Swarnarekha Mahotsav at Dumohani river, the confluence of rivers Kharkhai and Swarnarekha here, Roy said it was only the only river which flows directly into sea from its origin.

The minister lamented that rivers are being polluted and as a result people face health problem and water animals face extinction.

He appealed to people to plant trees on the river banks and maintain cleanliness of the river.
