6.7 magnitude earthquake jolts Bangladesh

The epicentre of the earthquake was recorded at 29 kilometres west of Imphal in India

A strong 6.7 magnitude earthquake originating in India's northeastern region today jolted neighbouring Bangladesh, forcing thousands of people to rush out of their home in panic.

The earthquake struck the country at 5:05 a.m local time. Its epicentre was 29 kilometres west of Imphal in India and 352 kilometres east-northeast of Dhaka. It was 35 kilometres deep, the US Geological Survey said.


Thousands of residents here gathered on the streets after feeling the tremors. People were seen running out of their homes to the streets. The early morning tremor was strongly felt across the city.

There were no immediate reports of casualties in the country.
