The headmistress of a government-aided school in Kodaikanal was suspended today in connection with the suicide of a class XI student, who ended his life after being allegedly pulled up for failure to pay fees and for irregular attendance.

K Mangayarkarasi, headmistress of the R C School, had been suspended two days after Rajeswaran hanged himself in his home, the district education department officials said.

Alleging that the boy took the extreme step after the headmistress scolded him for not paying the fees and also asked him to bring his parents for being absent, his relatives yesterday staged a demonstration.

They had demanded the headmistress be arrested.

In another similar action, the headmaster of an aided higher secondary school at Sirumalai Pudur in the district had been suspended by the education department after complaints that teachers did not turn up for work and the school remained closed for a long time, officials said.
