Three persons, including a girl were killed in three separate tragic incidents on the first day of 2014 in Visakhapatnam city today.
A second year BTech student at Gitam University U Akhil Varma of Seethammadhara area in the city drowned in the blue waters at the R K Beach while swimming.
The police said that Akhil and his relative had gone to R K Beach to spend New Year's day for sometime. While Nikhil was swimming, he was caught in a strong current which took him deep into the sea and drowned.

In another incident, a class eight girl student P Meghana (13) was killed after a tanker lorry ran over her while she was riding her bicycle on National Highway 16 near Kommadi under PM Palem police station limits in the city on Wednesday evening.
According to reports, Meghana and her three friends Preethi, Prudhvi and Usha of the Patha Madhurawada area in the city went to Marrikavalasa on two bicycles to meet their friends Swapna and Sarika on New Year's day.
While returning from Marikavala, a speeding tanker hit a bicycle on which Meghana and Preethi travelling from behind. Meghana was crushed under the wheels of the lorry while Preehi suffered injuries.
The driver fled the spot leaving the vehicle at the spot. The police has registered a case and an investigation is on.
Similarly, a motorist S Surendranatha (26) of the Ukkunagaram was killed in a road accident after he banged into the railing of bridge near Gajuwaka in the city on Wednesday in the morning.
