Time for registration of births abroad extended

Indians settled abroad are now allowed to register the birth of their children before heads of concerned Indian missions even after one year.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 16 of the Citizenship Act 1955, the central government, being of the opinion that it is necessary and expedient in public interest to do so, hereby delegates the power vested with the central government to register the birth of children even after expiry of one year of its occurrence under Section 4 of this Act to the Head of Indian Missions abroad," said G K Dwivedi, Joint Secretary in the Home Ministry, in an order.
 

The move will benefit thousands of people settled abroad who miss the one year deadline of registering the birth of their children.
