A Trinamool Congress candidate for municipal polls in Hooghly district who was wanted in connection with ransacking of a police outpost, surrendered to the police today.

Police said Bikram Gupta, TMC candidate for ward no 3 of Champdani Municipality, went to Bhadreswar police station and surrendered.

The police then arrested him.

The Chandernagore sub-divisional court later remanded him to seven days' jail custody.

Gupta allegedly led a mob that ransacked Champdani police station on April 5 in which five policemen were arrested.

The incident occurred after an altercation between a TMC worker and a policeman over checking papers of his motorbike. Soon, a large number of TMC workers attacked the police outpost and ransacked it, besides damaging three police vehicles.

Earlier 13 persons were arrested in connection with the incident.

Champdani Municipality goes to polls on April 25.
