Theatre owners and distributors in Tamil Nadu have decided not to screen Kamal Hassan's upcoming movie 'Viswaroopam'. The decision comes in the backdrop of the actor-cum producer's decision to release the movie in DTH platform first.
A member who attended the meeting said that it was a collective decision taken by the association president of the Chennai City Theatre Owners’ Association and Association from Ramanathapuram district.
At a joint meeting held on Thursday late evening, the Association leaders asked the actor, who is also the director of the film, to reconsider the decision to broadcast the film in DTH platform and cancel the licence given to the relevant companies for airing it.
It may be noted that six DTH companies have inked pacts with the actor to air the movie on January 10 at 9 pm, while the movie is scheduled to release on January 11th in theatres.
They claimed they would in the future boycott the films of all producers or actors who decide to give licence to DTH companies for airing films before the theatre release.
A decision had been taken by them not to run Vishwaroopam in theatres in most parts of Tamil Nadu, they said.
They also requested Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to intervene and "protect" the interests of theatre owners and film distributors
