Students and tourists here today bore the brunt of the day-long strike by transport workers with buses, autorickshaws and goods carriers keeping off roads, police said.
The strike was called by the Federation of Workers of the Motor Vehiclesto protest against the proposed amendment to the Motor Vehicles Act, which the unions dubbed as retrogade, they said.
INTUC, AITUC, CITU and other trade unionists held agitations in various places, the police said.
Police were deployed in vulnerable areas to ensure law and order.
Also, the workers protested against the hike in the price of petroleum products, they said.
