Uttar Pradesh Congress today staged a sit-in with a demand to raise the minimum support price of sugarcane and start the crushing season in the state's sugar mills.

The Congressmen, led by Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Nirmal Khatri, staged a sit-in at the GPO park here and shouted slogans against the state government alleging that it was taking sides with the sugar mill owners.

They alleged that the state government was maintaining sugarcane prices of the last year.

Speaking on the occasion, Khatri said the Samajwadi Party which came to power on the support of farmers is today out to fleece them by not hiking the cane prices.

Khatri also demanded that the pending cane dues of the farmers be cleared and crushing be immediately started by sugar mills in the state so that farmers could sell their produce.

The party also submitted a memorandum addressed to the Governor to the local officials in support of their demand.
