US Ambassador to India Richard Verma today said the policy of US is to "combat terrorism" in Pakistan, where it is trying to "support the establishment of peace and stability".

"US policy is designed to combat terrorism and violence in Pakistan. We are trying to support peace and stability in that country," Verma said.

"It can be a challenging situation sometime. But it is in both our interests that democracy takes root in Pakistan," Verma told at a press meet here.

"Last year two-third of US funding for Pakistan was for civilian aid towards infrastructure and health, while one-third was towards the military sector," he said.

Asked if Pakistan is serious about eliminating terrorism, the US diplomat said, "When President Obama had visited India, he said any safe haven for terrorists has to be eliminated and steps taken towards it. We continue to do that.

"Give democratic and moderate forces a chance, and the perpetrators of violence wherever ... In the Mumbai attack brought to justice," Verma added.

On Pakistan backing out of the National Security Advisor-level talks with India last month, the Ambassador said, "Have to give appropriate time to resume the talks. Dialogue is important.
