The Madras High Court today ordered notice to Tamil Nadu government on a PIL seeking a direction to it to strictly implement the July 18, 2005 Supreme Court order placing restrictions on usage of cone speakers.

The first bench, comprising Chief Justice S K Kaul and Justice M M Sundresh, before which a PIL from one S Kumaravelu came up for hearing, ordered notice to the Home Secretary, the Director General of Police and the City Police Commissioner, returnable byMarch 28.

The petitioner contended that the noise pollution caused by cone type speakers during religious and other festivals early in the morning was 'highly disturbing.'

He had lodged complaints with local police on several occasions but there was no action.

Hence, he was constrained to file the PIL to implement the Supreme Court order on the issue, he said.
