Veteran photo-journalist Manojit Chanda passed away after a brief illness at a city hospital today evening, the Calcutta Sports Journalists' Club stated in a release.

He was aged 87 and a bachelor.

Beginning his career as a freelancer he later worked with the Hindu group and was also associated with the Jugantar, a vernacular daily that has stopped publication.

Chanda had covered almost every sporting activity happening in Kolkata for more than 60 years and the CSJC feted him with a 'Lifetime Achievement' award and also accorded him a honourary life membership at the annual ceremony in April.

Condoling the death, Sports Journalists' Federation of India president G Viswanath said: "It is a great loss to sports photography in Bengal. He was (the) real doyen of photo-journalism of the city."

Mourning the demise of Chanda, CSJC president Dhiman Sarkar said: "He was always actively involved with the CSJC which still treasures a gift from his collection, a photograph of the club's inauguration by former chief minister Jyoti Basu, way back in 1983.
