A wreath laying ceremony by serving and retired Defence officials was held here today to mark 'Vijay Diwas', celebrated to commemorate India's victory in the 1971 war with Pakistan.

Lieutenant General Jagbir Singh, General Officer Commanding, Dakshin Bharat Area, Rear Admiral Alok Bhatnagar, Flag Officer Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Naval Area and Air Commodore Rippon Gupta, Air Officer Commanding, Air Force Station, Tambaram, laid wreaths and paid floral tributes at War Memorial here.

"Last post was also sounded in memory of their deceased comrades in arms," a Defence release said.

A smart guard of the Garrison Battalion saluted with arms and the last post was sounded followed by observing of two minutes' silence, it added.
 

Vijay Diwas marks the surrender of 93,000 Pakistani soldiers to India in the 1971 war between the two neighbours, which resulted in the creation of Bangladesh.
