The martyrs of the Kargil conflict in 1999 were remembered here on the occasion of Vijay Diwas with the three services of the Indian Armed Forces paying respects to soldiers who laid down their lives defending the country in the war.
A wreath laying ceremony was held at the Victory War Memorial here, with senior serving and retired officers of the three services paying floral tributes to the soldiers.
Lieutenant General Jagbir Singh, General Officer Commanding, Dakshin Bharat Area led them in paying their respects.
"Last post was also sounded in memory of their deceased comrades in arms," a Defence release here said.
Commodore Alok Bhatnagar, Naval Officer-in-Charge (Tamil Nadu and Puducherry) and Air Commodore Rippon Gupta, Air Officer Commanding, Air Force Station, Tambaram also laid the wreaths.
A two-minute silence was observed as a mark of respect for the martyrs, it added.
In neighbouring Puducherry, Welfare and Tourism Minister P Rajavelu led the Union Territory in paying tributes to the martyrs.
Wreaths were placed at the Kargil War memorial on the Beach Road there and a two-minute silence observed in memory of the deceased soldiers.
A team of functionaries of Puducherry unit of the BJP also paid tributes at the memorial, which was inaugurated by then Union Home Minister L K Advani.
In the conflict that involved Pakistan, Indian Army lost 490 officers, soldiers and jawans, before flushing out its enemies from the sector.
