A woman was granted divorce on grounds of cruelty by a Delhi court which held that her husband acted like a "beast" and made her life a "living hell".
The conduct�of the husband was nothing�short�of being monstrous and to term it as cruelty would be an understatement, it observed.
Relying on testimonies of the witness and the supporting documents, Additional District Judge Sujata Kohli said, "It becomes absolutely clear that the treatment meted out to the woman at the hands of her husband is beyond�imagination."
The woman, a resident of West Delhi, was granted divorce ex-parte as her husband never appeared to contest the case.
"The life of the woman seems to have been made a living hell by the husband and under the circumstances, there is no reason either on facts or under the law as to why the marriage be not dissolved immediately," the ADJ said.
In its order, the court in particular took note of an incident dated September 26, 2010, when the woman was offered drug-laced sweets by her husband due to which she felt unconscious.
She, however, regained her senses when she felt a burning sensation on her arms only to realise that her husband was burning her with a cigarette. Due to the effect of drugs, she could not fight back and her husband then tied her limbs and continued to inflict burn injuries on her body. The injuries were later photographed and shown to the court.
Taking note of the incident, the court said, "The man acted like a beast and the�entire medical records as well as copies of criminal complaints show that it cannot be expected from any human being to put up with such�kind�of treatment at the hands of another human being and�it�is�rather incredible�as to how she put up in the company of her husband even for�so�long".
The woman had moved the court seeking divorce on ground of cruelty at the hands of her husband. Married in February 2008, the woman submitted she was continuously harassed for dowry.
She submitted that her husband used to consume alcohol and beat her up on one pretext or the other.
