A woman has been arrested for "fraudulently" collecting funds in the name of cancer patients on behalf of an NGO which she left four years ago, police said today.

The accused, Mamta Yadav, was apprehended yesterday.

"The accused was arrested from MHADA's building in suburban Bandra," said DCP (Detection) Dhananjay Kulkarni.

According to the police, Yadav, a resident of Bhandup, had forged documents of Global Vision, a Thane-based NGO which helps cancer patients in need of financial aid.

"The accused was working with the NGO around four years ago. At present she she wasn't associated with it in anyway, but collected money from various places and people in the name of Global Vision by forgoing its documents, which stated she is associated with the NGO," he said.

Yadav used to show false medical documents of cancer "patients" to convince unsuspecting people and collect funds from them, the police officer said.

Police had received a complaint from one Dilip Jana (30), after which they laid a trap in the MHADA office at Bandra and arrested the woman while collecting money from people there, said police.

Yadav has been booked under relevant sections of the IPC.
