Be it malaria, diabetes, high blood pressure or any other critical diseases, traditional healers like the tribal 'disharis' in Koraput district of Odisha have medicines for them all using herbs, fruits, roots and tubers.

At least 56 'disharis' from across the district displayed various traditional medicines used by tribals to cure diseases at a two-day workshop organised by the district administration in collaboration with the Council of Analytical Tribal Studies (COATS) at Koraput recently.

According to disharis, as the economic condition of the tribals does not permit them to go for modern health care facilities, they mostly rely on these traditional methods of treatment that is very cheap and result-oriented.

Also, at least 22 ayush doctors from the district participated in the workshop. Apart from gaining knowledge about the disharis methods of treating some serious diseases, the ayush doctors also provided the disharis with much-needed medical knowledge so that the latter can serve people more effectively.

Director of COATS, P C Mohapatra said a few more such workshops for disharis would be organised in future.
