A 27-year-old Mass Communication student fell to his death from the seventh floor of a hostel in southwest Delhi's Dwarka area here last night.

While the police claimed that the deceased, identified as Mohit Joshi fell accidentally after consuming liquor with his friends while celebrating India's victory over Bangladesh in the World Cup quarterfinals, his family suspected foul play.

Joshi hailed from Haldwani in Uttarakhand. He was a first year student of mass communication in Indra Prastha University and was staying in Aravali hostel at Dwarka Sector-16.

"He was enjoying drinks with two of his friends on the seventh floor around midnight. His friends had gone downstairs to fetch something when residents heard a loud thud. When people rushed out of their rooms, Joshi was found lying in a pool of blood on the ground," said a senior police official.

Hostel authorities informed police about the incident following which he was rushed to a hospital where he was declared dead.

"His body has been sent for postmortem and an inquiry has been initiated," said DCP (southwest) Suman Goyal.

While the police termed it to be a case of accidental death or suicide, Joshi's kin suspected it to be a case of murder and demanded a proper inquiry into the case.

Police is questioning his friends and classmates to ascertain whether he was having any sort of trouble in the college or in the hostel. They have also questioned his family members to determine whether he was under depression.

Joshi's father Harish Chand Joshi is posted as accountant officer with Uttarakhand's forest department.
