Press Trust of India Jaipur
Rajasthan Transport Minister Yunus Khan today directed officials to make a detailed plan for a campaign on road safety in all the 33 districts of the state with special emphasis on rural areas.

Khan said road safety workshops and conferences should not be confined to only urban areas but remote villages and rural areas should be covered as well.

Addressing the inaugural session of a state-level workshop of road safety here, Khan said the government began a special campaign for road safety at Panchayat level which delivered positive results and it should be continued.

He asked the officers to make a detailed plan for the road safety campaign and identity the areas and districts where the number of road accidents are higher and take those districts on priority for the campaign.

"If the drivers follow traffic rules, the number of road accidents can be brought down. But the main challenge is to reach out to drivers. There are 65 lakh students enrolled at the senior secondary level in the state who are below the age of 18. They are the potential (driving license seekers) and they should be made aware of traffic rules," he said.

The minister said now the officers should conduct survey and identify those districts where the number of road accidents is high and such districts should be covered first in the campaign.

Senior officers of the transport department, representatives of NGOs working the area of road safety participated in the workshop.
