California police were hunting a gunman Thursday after a shooting broke out at a high school north of Los Angeles, with "multiple victims" confirmed.
"This is an active shooter situation," the local sheriff's department tweeted, as police and ambulances swarmed the area around Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, 40 miles (65 kilometers) north of Los Angeles.
It said the suspect, described as a male Asian with black clothing, was still on the run.
The city of Santa Clarita tweeted that there were "multiple victims injured" in the early-morning shooting.
Police spokesman Bob Boese, speaking on the local NBC news channel, said there were "at least three" victims but cautioned that it was not clear if all victims had been located.
"Our deputies are doing a systematic search of the campus, still looking for the suspect," Boese said. He said one weapon had so far been recovered.

A strong 7.1-magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of North Maluku province in eastern Indonesia early Friday, seismologists said, with the US tsunami warning centre saying a tsunami was not expected.
The quake hit 140 kilometres (87 miles) northwest of the coastal town of Ternate at a depth of 45 km, according to the US Geological Survey.
The US tsunami warning centre said a "destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected." The Indonesian meterological and climatology agency, however, warned people to stay clear of beaches as a precaution.
The quake was felt strongly in Ternate at 1:17 am local time (1617 GMT), sending sleeping residents fleeing their houses.
Indonesia experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its position on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where tectonic plates collide.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan insisted Ankara would not give up the Russian S-400 missile defence system to purchase the equivalent US Patriot missiles in comments published Thursday.
"It is out of the question to leave the S-400s and go towards the Patriots when we are at this point" of strengthening relations with Russia, Erdogan told Turkish journalists on board his plane after talks with US President Donald Trump Wednesday.
"We said 'But we would buy the Patriots too'. However, we will also have the S-400," he added, quoted by Hurriyet daily.
Erdogan had earlier in the interview spoken about Turkey and Russia's improving bilateral relations, focusing on issues such as natural gas and the rising number of Russian tourists coming to Turkey.

A judge in Slovakia has stepped down after being linked with a businessman accused of ordering the killing of an investigative journalist, officials said on Thursday.
Bratislava judge Miriam Repakova is among several members of the judiciary alleged to have exchanged text messages with murder suspect Marian Kocner. She is the first judge to be forced to step down.
The businessman is accused of ordering the February 2018 murder of Jan Kuciak, a reporter who had been investigating Kocner's business activities.

Russia on Thursday recognised Jeanine Anez as acting president of Bolivia following weeks of turmoil and the resignation of Evo Morales.

Mussels hitching a ride on ocean-going ships are likely responsible for the spread of an infectious cancer found in different species on either side of the Atlantic, scientists say.
A recent study in the journal eLife suggests that human activity may "unwittingly be contributing to the worldwide spread of infectious cancers" affecting mussels, clams and cockles.
Most often, cancer arises from DNA mutations in an organism's cells which lead to uncontrolled cell growth -- it does not normally spread from one organism to another, although it can.
"Tasmanian devils, dogs and bivalves have all developed cancers that can spread to others, acting more like a pathogen or parasite," lead author Marisa Yonemitsu, Research Technician at the Pacific Northwest Research Institute in Seattle, Washington, said in a summary of the study findings.

Whites in South Africa earned three times more than blacks on average, two decades after the demise of apartheid, the statistics authority said on Thursday.
In a report touching on the highly sensitive issue of inequality, research found that the wage gap between South Africa's groups increased between 2011 and 2015.
It said the average monthly earning among blacks -- who account for 80 per cent of the population -- was 6,899 rand (USD 464/422 euros), while the figure was 24,646 (USD 1,659/1,506 euros) for whites.
Income earnings in South Africa remained "heavily racialised", the statistics authority said.
It added that women earned roughly 30 per cent less on average than males.
Africa's most industrialised nation has struggled to bridge the gap between racial and gender groups since the fall of apartheid in 1994.

Ex-Arsenal star Thierry Henry has been appointed coach at MLS franchise Montreal Impact on a two-year contract, the Canadian club announced on Thursday.
