England and Australia produced a high-scoring thriller on Saturday night at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium. England first scored the highest team total in Champions Trophy history by posting 351 runs on the board, before Australia, with the help of a century from Josh Inglis and half-centuries from Matthew Short and Alex Carey, chased down the total with five wickets and 15 balls to spare. This is also Australia’s first win in the ICC Champions Trophy since 2009.
Earlier, Australia won the toss and invited England to bat first. Ben Dwarshuis struck twice in the first three overs as England lost Phil Salt (10) and Jamie Smith (15) cheaply.
But after that, Ben Duckett, along with Joe Root (68), added 158 runs for the third wicket before Root was trapped LBW by Zampa to get England out of early trouble. The spinner soon removed Harry Brook (3) to script a small comeback for Australia.
Jos Buttler (23) then played some big shots before losing his wicket to Glenn Maxwell. Dwarshuis then removed Liam Livingstone (14) before Marnus Labuschagne finally ended the record-breaking innings of Ben Duckett (165) to reduce at least 15-20 runs from England's score.
Marnus, in the final over, got the better of Brydon Carse (8), but Jofra Archer (21 not out), with three big shots, took England past the highest team total in Champions Trophy history to 351 for 8 after 50 overs.
In reply, Australia lost the big wickets of Travis Head (6) and Steve Smith (5) early, finding themselves on the back foot quickly.
Matthew Short (63) and Marnus Labuschagne (47) added 95 runs for the third wicket before losing their wickets to Liam Livingstone and Adil Rashid, respectively, as Australia lost momentum again.
However, Alex Carey (69), along with Josh Inglis, added 146 runs for the fifth wicket before getting dismissed by Brydon Carse, setting Australia up perfectly in the chase.
In the end, Josh Inglis (120 not out) and Glenn Maxwell (32 not out) added 74 unbeaten runs for the sixth wicket to complete the historic chase for Australia.
