Champions Trophy: Smith said team thought England would cross the 400 mark

Steve Smith said at one stage his Australian side thought England would score 400 runs on a flat track here but his bowlers pulled the team back to a "chaseable" target of 352, ultimately winning their high-scoring Champions Trophy match by five wickets on Saturday. Australia's five-wicket win was the highest-ever chase by any team at an ICC white-ball tournament, the previous best being Pakistan's 345 against Sri Lanka at the 2023 men's World Cup. "We thought 350 was chaseable. Looked like they (England) would get 400 but we trusted each other's skills, took pace off at the right times, hit hard lengths, squeezed and controlled the back end," Smith said at the post-match presentation. "Marnus bowled nicely too and took a few wickets. The two 'keepers (Alex Carey and Josh Inglis) have been batting beautifully, (they are) in great form," said the skipper who opted to bowl after winning the toss. Inglis was the main architect of the five-wicket win as he played the innings of his lif

Green may skip series against Pakistan to prepare for home Tests vs India

Australia batter Cameron Green is likely to skip the white-ball series in Pakistan later this year and instead play Sheffield Shield to prepare himself for the the big-ticket home Test series against India in December, according to head coach Andrew McDonald. The same template worked for the 24-year-old in the ongoing Test series in New Zealand as he hit a career-best 174 not out in Australia's big win in the first match here on Sunday. He was not included in the recent T20I series against the West Indies and New Zealand and instead earmarked him for West Australia's Sheffield Shield fixture against Tasmania in Hobart, where he struck an unbeaten 103 to provide an ideal warm-up for the first Test against the Kiwis. "It's a big decision to leave anyone out of international cricket when they're potentially in the best eleven, so I'm glad he (Green) embraced that when we had that conversation with him, and the return on it is pretty immediate," MacDonald said. England stand great chance in Ashes 2025 against 'Dad's Army': Vaughan

Former captain Michael Vaughan feels Australia looked jaded in the recent home Test series against the West Indies and said England stand a great chance in next year's Ashes if a "Dad's Army" is fielded by their arch-rivals. Vaughan said most of the players in the current Australian Test side are ageing and the need of the hour is to infuse fresh talent in order to continue dominating world cricket. Australia drew the recent two-Test series against the West Indies, who have a poor record Down Under. Playing in only his second Test, Shamar Joseph single-handedly guided West Indies to a narrow eight-run win at Brisbane, returning with stunning figures of 7/68 in the second innings. "There was not much optimism in Australia that it would be a great Test summer because the two touring teams, Pakistan and West Indies, had poor recent records Down Under. But it was actually very competitive, as proved by the Windies pulling off that stunning win at the Gabba," Vaughan wrote in a column f

Ashes 5th Test: Anderson keeps place as England name unchanged XI vs AUS

England announced an unchanged team on Wednesday to play Australia in the fifth and final Ashes test at the Oval. England record wicket-taker James Anderson, who turns 41 on the fourth day, retains his place in the side despite a disappointing series so far while pacer Mark Wood and all-rounder Chris Woakes have both been passed fit. The fifth test starts Thursday. Australia takes a 2-1 lead into the match and has already retained the urn but England is looking to level the series after the final-day washout at Old Trafford in the drawn fourth test. Jimmy Anderson is the greatest fast bowler to play the game, England captain Ben Stokes said. He's not had the impact and the wickets he'd have liked to in this series, he's come under a bit of flak, but he's a quality performer. Australia arrived in south London with an insurmountable lead as holder of the Ashes, but a similar scenario in 2019 saw the team come unstuck in the final test and forced to settle for a drawn series.
