Rohit Sharma's blazing hundred fired Team India to a 4-wicket win in the 2nd ODI against England at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack, Odisha. India now have taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the 3-match series.
Earlier, for the second time in a row, England won the toss and opted to bat first, and for the second time in a row, their openers got them off to a solid start. Phil Salt (26) and Ben Duckett added 81 runs for the first wicket before debutant Varun got the wicket of Salt to provide India with the breakthrough.
Duckett (65) then brought up his half-century, taking England past the 100-run mark before Ravindra Jadeja got his wicket in the 16th over. Joe Root added 66 runs for the third wicket with Harry Brook (31) to keep England ahead before the latter lost his wicket to Harshit Rana.
Root kept the English innings going and added 51 runs for the fourth wicket with skipper Jos Buttler (34) before the latter handed an easy catch to Shubman Gill at mid-off. Just when England were looking comfortable again, Ravindra Jadeja removed Joe Root (69) and Jamie Overton (6) to reduce the visitors to 258 for 6.
Mohammed Shami then removed Gus Atkinson (3) before Adil Rashid (14) got himself run out as England lost their eighth wicket. Liam Livingstone (41), with some big hits late in the innings, took England’s score past 300 before getting run out in the last over.
England’s last wicket also fell via a run-out, in the form of Mark Wood (0), as the Three Lions were bundled out for 304 in 49.5 overs.
In reply, it was Indian skipper Rohit Sharma who stepped up this time for the country, hitting his 32nd ODI century on the night. His opening partner Shubman Gill also continued his consistent display and scored 60 runs again. Back-to-back fifties by him assures India of a solid opening pair for the hosts.
While Virat Kohli was sent back at just 5 runs on his ODI return, Shreyas Iyer also contributed well with a 47-ball 44 before a mix-up with Axar Patel cost his wicket via a run-out.
In the end, it was Axar Patel and Jadeja who scored the final runs and got India a 4-wicket win within 45 overs.
