Abhishek Sharma’s latest display of fearless hitting followed a now-familiar script as India out-batted New Zealand by 48 runs in the opening T20 International at Jamtha on Wednesday.
Abhishek’s blitz powers India to 238
Put in to bat on a true surface, India rode on Abhishek’s breathtaking 84 off just 35 balls to post a daunting 238 for seven. The left-hander, who has quickly become India’s most destructive weapon in the shortest format, dismantled New Zealand’s bowling with eight sixes and five fours, striking at 240.
After early dismissals of Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan, Abhishek took charge, allowing Suryakumar Yadav to play himself in during a rapid 99-run third-wicket stand off 47 balls. Suryakumar’s 32 off 22 was scratchy but effective, before Mitchell Santner briefly slowed the scoring with his wicket.
Abhishek fell soon after, but the momentum never dipped. Hardik Pandya chipped in with 25, while Rinku Singh provided the finishing flourish with an unbeaten 44 off 20 balls. Rinku’s assault on Daryl Mitchell in the final over, which went for 21, pushed India to an imposing total.
Black Caps’ bowlers struggle on featherbed
New Zealand’s attack found little assistance on the Jamtha shirt-front. Jacob Duffy was the most economical with two for 27, while Kyle Jamieson and Santner conceded heavily as India maintained a run rate close to 12 an over.
Phillips fights, but chase falls short
Chasing 239, New Zealand lost Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra early to Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya. Glenn Phillips led the resistance with a ferocious 78 off 40 balls, adding 79 in just seven overs with Mark Chapman, who made 39 off 24.
However, the asking rate proved relentless. Varun Chakaravarthy broke the partnership and finished with two for 37, while India kept chipping away at the wickets. Despite contributions from Daryl Mitchell and Mitchell Santner, New Zealand closed on 190 for seven.
India’s T20 juggernaut rolls on
With a dominant batting performance backed by timely wickets, India once again underlined why the T20 format has become their most formidable suit over the past year, with Abhishek Sharma firmly at the centre of that transformation.
