No more boarding pass stamps from Sept 1: What travellers need to know

International travellers departing India will be able to use e-boarding passes as immigration authorities end mandatory boarding pass stamping from September 1

Passengers flying abroad from Indian airports will no longer need to get their boarding passes physically stamped by immigration authorities from September 1.

 

This move is aimed at making the international departure process simpler.

 

The Bureau of Immigration (BoI), under the Ministry of Home Affairs, has directed airport authorities to end the mandatory requirement for physical boarding passes and their stamping at immigration counters, officials told PTI.

 

Instead, travellers can present an e-boarding pass on their smartphones for immigration clearance, according to the officials. The change will apply at all international airports in India.

 

What changes for international travellers?

 

Under the new arrangement, passengers departing India will not have to carry a physical boarding pass specifically for immigration stamping. An e-boarding pass displayed on a smartphone will be accepted for clearance.

 

 

However, physical boarding passes will still be accepted at immigration counters. The key change is that immigration officials will no longer stamp them from September 1, officials told PTI.

 

The move follows concerns that the existing stamping process was creating inconvenience for passengers. Officials said there had also been instances where boarding passes could not be read properly because of "improper or incorrect" stamping.

 

The BoI subsequently reviewed the process and decided to remove the requirement, the officials said.

 

Will you still need a boarding pass at the airport?

 

Yes. The change does not mean passengers can travel without a boarding pass.

 

Travellers will continue to need their boarding pass for the relevant stages of their airport journey and should keep their digital version accessible on their phone. The change specifically concerns the requirement for immigration authorities to stamp the boarding pass.

 

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has also not been stamping boarding passes during individual security frisking, officials told PTI. The CISF had stopped stamping boarding passes for domestic and international passengers several years ago.

 

What does this mean for passengers?

 

For international travellers, the immediate benefit is one less physical-document requirement during departure. Passengers using e-boarding passes will be able to show the document directly from their smartphones rather than carrying a paper copy for immigration stamping.

 

It could also reduce confusion caused by unclear or incorrectly placed immigration stamps, which officials identified as one of the reasons for ending the practice.

 

Travellers should nevertheless ensure that their phone is charged and that they can access their e-boarding pass when required. Keeping a copy of the boarding pass available offline can also be useful in case of connectivity issues at the airport.

 

Physical immigration stamps may also be phased out

 

The government is considering a further change to the way immigration records are handled.

 

Officials told PTI that a pilot project to eliminate immigration entry and exit stamps for Indian passport holders is also planned. The pilot exercise is expected to be completed before the system is rolled out more widely across Indian airports.

 

If implemented, this would represent a larger shift away from physical documentation during international travel, with immigration processing increasingly relying on digital records rather than stamps in passports or on paper documents.

 

For now, however, the September 1 change is limited to boarding pass stamping at immigration counters. Travellers should continue to follow the normal immigration, airline and security requirements applicable to their international journey.
