Amazon investing $7.8 bn more in Ohio-based cloud computing ops: Officials

Amazon's profitable cloud business will invest roughly USD 7.8 billion by the end of 2029 to expand its data centre operations in central Ohio, state leaders announced on Monday, further advancing the state's efforts to establish itself as the Midwest's technology hub. The new investments by Amazon Web Services, or AWS, were announced by Republican Gov. Mike DeWine and Lt. Gov. Jon Husted, who leads the governor's technology office. The financial outlay further cements Ohio as the heart of our nation's technology and innovation, the governor said in a statement. AWS launched its first data centres in the region in 2016 and currently operates campuses in two counties in central Ohio, home to the capital city of Columbus. The administration said numerous locations are being considered as sites for the new data centres, in a selection to be announced later this year. The cloud computing company is now responsible for the second largest private sector investment in the state's history,

Amazon, Marriott and other cos vow to hire thousands of refugees in Europe

Multinational companies including Amazon, Marriott and Hilton pledged on Monday to hire more than 13,000 refugees, including Ukrainian women who have fled the war with Russia, over the next three years in Europe. Just ahead of World Refugee Day on Tuesday, more than 40 corporations say they will hire, connect to work or train a total of 250,000 refugees, with 13,680 of them getting jobs directly in those companies. Every number is a story of an individual family who left everything, seeking safety, seeking protection and wanting to be able to rebuild as quickly as possible," said Kelly Clements, UN deputy high commissioner for refugees. "So the commitments that businesses are going to make on Monday are absolutely essential. She says 110 million people have been displaced worldwide, with an estimated 12 million from Ukraine, nearly half of whom are living in Europe after the continent's largest movement of refugees since World War II. Amazon's $1.7 bn deal to buy Roomba maker iRobot gets UK approval

British antitrust regulators cleared Amazon's purchase of robot vacuum maker iRobot on Friday, but the USD 1.7 billion deal still faces scrutiny in the United States and Europe. The Competition and Markets Authority said it decided not to escalate its initial investigation because it concluded that the deal would not result in a substantial lessening of competition within the United Kingdom. Amazon said it was pleased with the result. We look forward to similar decisions from other regulators soon, the company said in a statement. Consumer groups have voiced concerns that Amazon's purchase of Bedford, Massachusetts-based iRobot, which makes the popular Roomba robotic vacuum cleaners, would widen the e-commerce giant's dominance in the smart home market. The acquisition is still facing a review in the US by the Federal Trade Commission amid worries about Amazon's growing market power. It's also under scrutiny by the European Union's executive arm, which opened a review of the deal

Amazon's cloud business slows as companies pull back on service, cut costs

When the pandemic hit three years ago, Amazon was one of the few businesses that thrived. Customers flocked to the online commerce site amid global lockdowns. But even when those lockdowns eventually lifted and Amazon's sales slowed as people returned to stores, the company could still count on its massive cash cow: Amazon Web Services. Now even the lucrative cloud services business is feeling pressure. Companies are trimming their expenses amid concerns about high inflation and fears that a recession might be around the corner. And many of them are being more cautious about their cloud costs, leading to a slowdown in one of Amazon's profitable businesses. The tech giant's first quarter earnings report showed its cloud unit generated USD 21.4 billion and was growing at 16 per cent in the first three months of this year much slower than the 37 per cent growth rate a year prior. It is under those circumstances that AWS will host its two-day security-focused cloud conference starti
