Indian fencer Taniksha Khatri goes down in QF, misses medal narrowly

India narrowly missed out on a medal in Asian Games fencing when Taniksha Khatri lost to world No 2 Man Wai Vivian Kong of Hong Kong 7-15 in individual epee quarterfinal here on Sunday. Khatri, who won her three pool matches to qualify for the knockout round, had seven touches but her opponent was superior and sealed the issue to make the semifinals. A quarterfinal win would have guaranteed at least a bronze medal for the Indian who out-performed her teammate Ena Arora by just four points (15-11) in the round of 32. Khatri then prevailed over Uzbekistan's Shakhzoda Egamberdieva 15-10. Earlier in the pool matches, Khatri defeated Ivy Claire Dinoy of Philippines (5-1), Zolboo Ochirkhuyag of Mongolia (5-0) and Yemen's Samah Abdullah Musleh Alshami 5-1. Her only two losses were to Singapore's Elle Meihui Koh (15) and South Korea's Sera Song 35. The knock-outs have three rounds of three-minute each and the fencer who completes 15 touches is adjudged the winner. The pool matches on th

India play out 1-1 draw with Myanmar, enter round of 16 in men''s football

Riding on a Sunil Chhetri strike, the Indian men's football team held Myanmar to a 1-1 draw and progressed to the round of 16 in the Asian Games here on Sunday. They will play Saudi Arabia in the pre-quarters. Chhetri scored from the spot in the 23rd minute but it was Rahim Ali who earned the penalty when he was brought down inside the box by Hein Zeyar Lin. While Lin was shown a yellow card for his sliding tackle, the peerless Chhetri made no mistake in finding the back of the net, in what was a repeat of the act he performed against Bangladesh in the second group game two days ago. Coming off the bench, Kyaw Htwe found the equaliser for Myanmar when he headed the ball past Dheeraj Singh in the 74th minute at the Xiaoshan Sports Center Stadium. However, despite the two teams having same points, India progressed as the runner-up from Group A, as the Chhetri-led side has scored more goals than Myanmar in the tournament. All in all, it was a creditable performance from the Indians

Chances of wushu players featuring in Asian Games as good as over

The chances of participation of the three wushu players from Arunachal Pradesh, who were denied entry by the Chinese government for the Asian Games, are as good as over. The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), though, on Sunday said that it was still looking into the matter. The denial of visa by China to Nyeman Wangsu, Onilu Tega and Mepung Lamgu had led to Sports Minister Anurag Thakur cancelling his visit to Hangzhou for the continental showpiece as a mark of protest. Wushu competitions began on Sunday and Lamgu did not start (DNS) in her women's changquan event, while Tega's name was missing in the women's 52kg pre-quarterfinal competition. The women's changquan event in which Wangsu was to compete will have its final on Monday. The OCA, however, said it was looking into the matter. "We are definitely looking at it and having discussions with the government. Let us see, something may come out of it," OCA acting president Randhir Singh said at a press conference without specifying

Indian men lose to South Korea 0-3 in TT quarterfinals, women bow out

The Indian men's team missed out on an Asian Games bronze medal in table tennis after a second-string South Korea blanked them 3-0 in the quarterfinals here on Sunday. Harmeet Desai lost the first match 0-3 to An Jaehyun. G Sathiyan tried to put up a fight, but it was not enough to get past Park Ganghyeon as India trailed 0-2 after the first two ties. The onus was on Achantha Sharath Kamal to bring India back into the contest. However, things did not quite unfold in the manner the Indians would have liked as the veteran from Chennai went down 2-3 to Oh Junsung. The defeat would have been even more hurting for the Indians as South Korea's top three players did not even play in the match. Earlier in the day, Sharath raised his game just in time to help India escape unscathed against Kazakhstan. But the women's table tennis team imploded against a resilient Thailand to bow out of the Games. Star Indian paddler Manika Batra failed in both her singles matches as the women's team lost
