Production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel set for continued growth: IATA

As efforts continue to reduce carbon emissions, international airlines' grouping IATA on Tuesday said the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is set for continued growth with a wide geographic footprint spread across North America, Europe and Asia Pacific. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) expects overall renewable fuel production to reach an estimated capacity of at least 69 billion litres (55 million tonnes) by 2028. The grouping of more than 300 airlines has also pitched for production incentives to support the aviation industry's energy transition as well as for continued approval for more diversification of methods and feedstocks available for SAF production. With these two measures successfully in place, the expected 2028 production levels would be realistically aligned with recently published roadmaps to net zero carbon emissions by 2050, IATA Director General Willie Walsh said. According to IATA, SAF will comprise a portion of this growing output,

Vistara operates Boeing 787 aircraft using sustainable aviation fuel

Full service carrier Vistara on Thursday said it operated a Boeing 787 aircraft on the Delhi-Mumbai route, using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This is the first time that an Indian carrier has operated a commercial domestic flight on a wide-body aircraft, using a blend of 17 per cent SAF with 83 per cent conventional jet fuel, the airline said in a statement. The Delhi-Mumbai flight using blended with SAF helped the airline reduce approximately 10,000 pounds of CO2 emissions, it said. "This pioneering initiative is part of Vistara's ongoing efforts to minimize carbon footprint and support a sustainable future for the aviation industry," the airline said. Last month, the joint venture of Tata Group-Singapore Airlines -- Vistara -- had operated a wide-body aircraft on a long-haul international route using sustainable aviation fuel, which was also the first time for an Indian airline. A blend of 30 per cent SAF and 70 per cent conventional jet fuel was used on a ferry flight betwe

Jet fuel price hiked 4% by Rs 4,218 per KL in line with rising oil rates

Jet fuel (ATF) price on Wednesday was hiked by 4 per cent in line with firming international oil prices but petrol and diesel rates remained on freeze for a record 10th month in running. Aviation turbine fuel (ATF) price was increased by Rs 4,218 per kilolitre, or 3.9 per cent, to Rs 1,12,356.77 per kl in the national capital, according to a price notification of state-owned fuel retailers. The increase follows three rounds of reduction since November. The price on January 1 was reduced to Rs 1,08,138.77 per kl from Rs 1,17,587.64. Prior to that, the price was slashed by 2.3 per cent on December 1 and 4.19 per cent on November 1. The rate hike will increase the burden on airlines for whom fuel makes for almost 40 per cent of the operating cost. ATF price is revised on the 1st of every month based on the average rate of international benchmark and foreign exchange rates. Petrol and diesel prices, however, continued to remain on freeze for a record tenth month in a row. Petrol costs

India has potential to produce sustainable aviation fuel: IATA executive

India is among the countries that has the largest potential to produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), which will be a key enabler for the global airlines industry in reducing emissions, according to an IATA executive. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is a grouping of international airlines. Sebastian Mikosz, Senior Vice President for Environment & Sustainability at IATA, on Tuesday also suggested extending incentives for entities to enter the market for production of SAF. At a media roundtable here, Mikosz said that India is one of the countries which has the largest potential in producing SAF. Airlines will buy SAF, which is expected to account for around 65 per cent of decarbonisation and will be a key enabler in reducing emissions, he added. For production of SAF, there should be access to feedstock like biomass, he said and added that environmental problem has to be tackled at the global level. Earlier in the day, Civil Aviation Secretary Rajiv Bansal said

Govt looking at mandating jet fuel blending with sustainable fuel: Official

The government is working on mandating blending of jet fuel with sustainable aviation fuel as the country works on ways to reduce emissions, Civil Aviation Secretary Rajiv Bansal said on Tuesday. "We are committed to reducing emissions by fossil fuels... the (civil aviation) ministry is working closely with the ministry of petroleum and natural gas on the issues related to Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)," he said. He was speaking at the IATA Aviation Energy Forum here. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is an international grouping of airlines. Bansal said both ministries are working to mandate a certain percentage of blending. "... that is still work in progress. We do realise that unless we mandate over a period of time, demand will not be created," he added. Elaborating on SAF, he said there are two important things -- the feed stock and production. "Do we have as a country adequate feedstock for producing SAF? Are there technologies in place, proven, time-test
