WFI not suspended, Centre spreading false news, alleges Priyanka Gandhi

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra accused the Centre on Monday of spreading "false news" about dissolving the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and alleged that its activities have been stopped to spread confusion and shelter a BJP MP who has been accused of sexual harassment by female wrestlers. She also alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) always protects the accused with all its might and tortures the victims whenever incidents of atrocities on women come to light. "The BJP is spreading false news about dissolving the wrestling federation. The federation has not been dissolved, its activities have been stopped so that the accused can be saved by spreading confusion. Do they have to stoop to this level to suppress the voice of aggrieved women?" the Congress general secretary asked in a post in Hindi on X. "The well-known players who made the country proud accused a BJP MP of sexual harassment and the government stood with the accused. The victims were tortured and t

Posters about Brij Bhushan's 'dabdaba' removed in UP's Gonda post WFI row

Posters and hoardings declaring the "dominance" of BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh put up here after his aide won the Wrestling Federation of India chief polls have been removed after the Centre suspended the newly-elected sports body. Singh, who helmed the WFI for multiple terms, had boasted about his "dabdaba" (dominance) which he had asserted will continue as his confidant Sanjay Singh won the WFI polls. He was accused of sexual harassment by some female wrestlers. Posters and hoardings reading "dabdaba toh hai dabdaba toh rahega (there is his dominance, there will be his dominance" were put up outside the MP's house here and at other places in the town after Sanjay Singh's victory in the polls. His supporters also pasted pamphlets carrying the same message on their vehicles. BJP slams INDIA bloc over DMK MP's 'derogatory' remarks on Bihar workers

The BJP on Sunday hit out at the INDIA bloc over DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran's alleged derogatory remarks on workers from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, and said voters of the Hindi-speaking states will teach the opposition alliance a lesson in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. The BJP reaction came after a video clip of an alleged derogatory remark made months ago by Maran surfaced on social media. In the video clip, Maran purportedly said that people in the states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar who had learnt "only Hindi", construct houses, clean roads and toilets in Tamil Nadu, after learning Tamil. "This is the scenario if Hindi is learnt." Reacting sharply to Maran's remarks, senior BJP leader and former Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, "They should stop insulting (people of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh) like this". Labourers from Bihar go to Tamil Nadu for work "due to the situations created by their (DMK) ally Nitish Kumar in Bihar," Prasad alleged. "But if someone does labour, will you insult

BJP, Opposition trade barbs in council over Dawood 'relative' link claim

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday rejected NCP MLC Eknath Khadse's allegations that a BJP minister had attended a wedding in 2017-18 hosted by a family related to fugitive Underworld don Dawood Ibrahim. Demanding Khadse's apology to the legislative council for making a baseless claim, Fadnavis said perhaps the allegation was raised because Uddhav Thackeray is present in the House. Khadse, who belongs to the Sharad Pawar camp of NCP, showed photos of the cabinet minister attending a wedding and alleged that the family is related to Dawood Ibrahim, the prime accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts case. Council chairperson Neelam Gorhe directed that the name of the minister be removed from the proceeding. She also rejected the opposition's demand for a discussion. Fadnavis, also the Home Minister, said, "The concerned minister and many other political leaders and government officers had attended the wedding of a nephew of a renowned Muslim priest in

INDIA bloc to meet first time since Cong's recent poll defeats: Key agenda

The meeting of opposition INDIA bloc parties on Tuesday is likely to focus on seat-sharing in key states, with some leaders pushing for an agreement before December 31, and on redrawing the joint strategy to take on the BJP after the recent reverses in assembly polls. The key challenge before the leaders of various opposition parties who have come together to fight the BJP unitedly in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections is also to come up with an alternative common programme as a counter to the ruling dispensation. Sources said a section of opposition leaders is of the view that the seat-sharing should be done before December 31 so as to help focus on evolving joint campaign strategy and present a common programme to the people. The immediate challenge before the INDIA bloc is also to build a consensus on having a convener, a spokesperson and a common secretariat, as it is a tricky issue due to differences among the constituents. The recent victory of the BJP in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh

Organisational experience, social signalling drive BJP's choice of new CMs

The BJP's decision to name first-time MLA Bhajan Lal Sharma as its chief ministerial pick in Rajasthan may have surprised many but the choice is a tribute to dedicated organisational workers, a quality which along with social signalling figured in picking chief ministers for two other states as well, top functionaries of the party said. In a post-poll scenario where the BJP top brass believed it had the mandate to usher in a new line of leadership amid claims of many entrenched satraps, more so in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, it has opted for fresh faces whose elevation will enthuse its ordinary workers, sources said. A senior BJP leader noted that Sharma fitted the bill of an ideal 'karyakarta' toiling for the organisation for decades who campaigned diligently for the party in many states during a series of assembly polls across the country over the last many years. With Prime Minister Narendra Modi often emphasising in BJP's meetings for its members to work sincerely without ...
